What is my philosophy?

In my 20+ years as a practicing psychologist, I have come to learn that there are three fundamental truths about getting better: (1) improvement cannot occur unless the person is aware of what needs to change, (2) improvement cannot occur unless the person is aware of what’s getting in the way of changing, and most importantly, (3) despite what people say they want, they don’t want to change.

At its most basic, my philosophy boils down to the simple idea that awareness is the key to change. You need to be aware of what you're doing, why you're doing it, what’s getting in the way of your improvement, and your inherent desire to resist getting better. Without awareness of these areas, any evaluation of your performance is based on false information, and the chances of getting better decrease dramatically. By growing your awareness of these blind spots, you can begin to make more accurate assessments of what’s working and what’s not. In other words, you can design an improvement plan based on what is actually happening versus what you think is happening. As a result, your chances of getting better dramatically increase.  Without being able to make this distinction, any improvement will simply be the result of luck, leaving you with either a sense of frustration (not knowing why something is happening) or false hope (thinking you know why something is happening when you really don't). If you truly want to get better, you need to actively cultivate and prioritize self-awareness. This means being honest with yourself, acknowledging your strengths, weaknesses, and limitations without judgment. Embrace feedback, even when it may be uncomfortable or challenging, as it can be a valuable source of insight. Reflect on your actions, thoughts, and emotions regularly, seeking to understand the patterns that govern your behavior.

In addition, practice mindfulness to stay present and attuned to the moment, observing your thoughts and reactions as they arise. By doing so, you can catch yourself in the act of repeating unhelpful behaviors or falling into self-defeating thought patterns. Awareness allows you to break free from the cycle of automatic responses and empowers you to make conscious choices that align with your goals for improvement.

Moreover, surround yourself with individuals who support your growth and are willing to provide constructive feedback. Engage in open conversations and seek perspectives outside your own to gain a more comprehensive understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.

Finally, be patient and compassionate with yourself throughout this journey of self-awareness and personal development. Recognize that change takes time and that setbacks are a natural part of the process. By adopting a growth mindset and understanding that mistakes are opportunities to learn, you can maintain a positive outlook and keep moving forward.

In conclusion, the path to genuine improvement lies in the cultivation of self-awareness. By recognizing the influence of your actions, thoughts, and emotions, you can navigate the complexities of personal development with clarity and purpose. Through increased awareness, you gain the ability to make informed choices, design effective improvement strategies, and ultimately, elevate your potential for growth and success.

What’s the process like working with me?

My approach to working with clients is grounded in a deep understanding of the complex interplay between the mind and athletic performance. My goal is to empower athletes of all levels to achieve peak mental and physical states, enabling them to unlock their full potential and excel in their respective sports.

  • Initial Assessment: The process begins with an in-depth initial assessment, where I take the time to get to know the athlete as an individual. I gather information about their sporting background, specific goals, strengths, weaknesses, and any mental or emotional challenges they may be facing. This assessment allows me to tailor my approach to their unique needs and aspirations.

  • Goal Setting: Together with the athlete, we establish clear and measurable performance goals. These goals not only include tangible achievements in their sport but also encompass mental and emotional aspects that are essential for peak performance, such as confidence, focus, resilience, and motivation.

  • Mental Skills Training: I introduce the athlete to a range of evidence-based mental skills and techniques that are relevant to their sport and goals. This may include visualization exercises, goal-setting strategies, self-talk management, relaxation techniques, and methods to enhance concentration and attention control.

  • Performance Analysis: I work closely with the athlete to analyze their performance, both during training and in competitive settings. We identify patterns and areas for improvement, as well as factors that may be influencing their mental state during critical moments of competition.

  • Developing Resilience: Athletes often face setbacks and challenges in their journey. I help them develop psychological resilience, teaching them how to bounce back from disappointments, handle pressure, and maintain a positive mindset during tough times.

  • Stress and Anxiety Management: Performance anxiety can hinder an athlete's ability to perform at their best. I equip athletes with strategies to manage stress and anxiety effectively, ensuring they can stay composed and focused under pressure.

  • Incorporating Feedback: Throughout the process, I encourage open communication and regular feedback from the athlete. This helps us fine-tune our approach and ensures that the athlete feels supported and engaged in the process.

  • Mental Conditioning for Training and Competition: I emphasize the importance of mental conditioning alongside physical training. Athletes learn to incorporate mental skills into their training routines and competition preparations, creating a holistic and integrated approach to performance improvement.

  • Ongoing Support: As the athlete progresses, I provide ongoing support and guidance to maintain their mental well-being and optimal performance. This includes periodic check-ins, follow-up sessions, and assistance during challenging phases.

By following this comprehensive and individualized process, I help athletes enhance their mental game, gain a competitive edge, and achieve excellence in their chosen sport. As a sports psychologist, my ultimate satisfaction comes from witnessing my clients thrive both on and off the field, achieving their dreams and realizing their full potential as athletes and as individuals.
